Higher Grounds Ministries Our Mission: We believe that all people deserve the basic necessities of life, and Higher Grounds Ministries are called to serve this purpose. Higher Grounds Ministries are non-profit services. Higher Grounds Ministries are non-profit services.   Higher Grounds Ministries is to provide safe shelter, food, support services, and an avenue to self-sufficiency for homeless adults. Client services include shelter, meals, case management, phone and mail service, and access to shower, laundry, and storage facilities. Who do we serve? Our population is homeless adults, Veterans, male, female & their children. The majority of our residents come from dysfunctional family situations, including child abuse and/or neglect, and parents with substance abuse problems or mental illness. Ethnically, our population is Multicultural. We estimate that 35% of our residents have substance abuse issues and about a quarter suffer from mental illness or significant emotional problems. There is an overlap of people in both these populations who could be found to have dual diagnoses. The remainder of our population is considered short term or situationally homeless; their primary reason for homelessness is poverty, often caused or exacerbated by a number of factors, including a lack of affordable housing, inadequate income, or chronic health problems. Our new program In April 2002, Higher Grounds Ministries reorganized and began a transitional program designed to directly address the cycle of poverty that plagues many of our residents. It is open to sober men and women who work at least 30 hours per week or are actively seeking such employment, or have legitimate income from an assistance agency. Potential members are interviewed by Shelter case managers to determine if they qualify for the program. If so, they generate a contract of goals toward secure housing, financial stability, and, when an issue, drug-free living. Transition program members are charged a nominal fee for a "permanent" bunk, and are required to deposit 85% of their pay into a Shelter-administrated savings account, which they may withdrawal upon leaving the program. It is our hope that this program will help some of our residents mainstream into steady employment, quality housing, and greater personal well-being, while we remain a source of safe, caring refuge to the homeless of our community, regardless of their circumstances.   Your donations are tax deductible.   Tel: 409-908-9168 Alfred Bell, Chaplain   Contact Us
